4 Hockey Tips That Relate To Poker Affiliating

4 Tips Poker Affiliates Can Learn From Hockey

December 10th, 2008

One of my friends in the poker affiliate industry, Randy Ray, suggested on his weekly radio show that poker affiliates think outside the box and write an article relating poker to something that really has nothing to do with poker itself.  Writing such articles can engage readers better than a normal article, even more so if they are interested in both topics.  I decided to give it a try combining poker affiliate tips with the sport of Hockey (Living up in Canada I am a huge hockey fan).  The following are four strategies in hockey that can be related to poker affiliating:

1 - Play as a team: In hockey it is important that all 5 players on the ice play as a team and work together.  Players on the ice need to move the puck around and support each other on the ice.  With out the team work it is a given that in the end the team won't win to many games.  This same rule applies to Poker Affiliates. It is so important for poker affiliates to make friends with other poker affiliates.  This can be done on the industry forums, through e-mail or even industry conferences.  When you have friends in the poker affiliate industry you will be able to do things such as exchange links, exchange ideas, or review each other websites.  Personally I wouldn't be anywhere close to where I am right now if I didn't work and talk with other affiliates.

2 - Quality vs Quantity of shots on net: When playing hockey one of the things you need to focus on is the quality of the shot you are taking on net.  While it is great to have a high number (quantity) of shots on net, shots from the corner or 90 feet away have a very low percentage of going in the net.  Having 20 quality shots on net will create more goals than 45 low quality shots.  This can be applied in the poker affiliate industry with creating content and websites.  One of the things you need to focus on when creating a website is the quality of the articles you are posting.  You will have a much higher success rate if you are posting ten high quality, in depth poker room reviews of the best rooms out there rather than low quality 250 word reviews on 30 random poker rooms.  The high quality of the articles on your website will help convert visitors, keep players coming back to your site, and can even create a few natural links from other poker affiliates.

3 - Shoot to score:  One thing I have been taught in hockey is when you are taking a shot you need to be shooting to score.  Every time the puck leaves your stick towards the net you should be thinking about it hitting the back of the net.  In poker affiliating you need to have the same mindset.  Every time you launch a website or write a piece of content you need to focus on 'scoring' or in our case making money.  Sure you can do the things that all affiliates do and make a little bit of money here and there, but if you are serious you need to have the mindset of making money all of the time.

4 - Work, Work, Work: When playing hockey I am a big fan of this strategy, I may not be the most skilled player but I've always loved the quote "hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard".  Just like in hockey, poker affiliates who bust their ass will always be successful in some way.  If you can work hard for 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week I can guarantee you will see some great results.  Most affiliates, including myself, struggle with this.  When working on your computer it is hard to be completely focused and working during the day; Things like MSN, facebook, forums always seem to get in the way.  As an affiliate if you can block those types of things out and work hard you will see good results, trust me.  Try adding 3 pages of quality content to your sites everyday and you will be making some good money within a year or so.
